Tomasz Kuszczak - Manchester United Goalkeeper on Loan at Watford

Kuszczak is a Polish goalkeeper contracted to Manchester United. On the 21st February 2012 it was announced officially that he would immediately join npower Championship club Watford on an emergency loan until the end of the season. It looks likely that Kuszczak will no longer remain a Manchester United player by the end of summer 2012. He made 61 appearances for Manchester United, after joining the club from West Bromwich Albion.

Tomasz Kuszczak is a goalkeeper from Poland which is contracted to Manchester United. Tomasz was born on the 20th March 1982 and hence at present he is 29 years old. He was born in Krosno Odrza?skie, which is a town in Western Poland, with around 12,000 citizens. Kuszczak started his youth career with Polish club ?l?sk Wroc?aw before moving as a youth player to German club KFC Uerdingen 05.

Kuszczak's talent was noticed by the scouts of Hertha Berlin, and signed for the club's reserve team in 2000. He was promoted to the first team of Hertha Berlin in 2001, one year after joining the reserve team. He spent 3 seasons at the German club but failed to make a single league appearance for them. While playing for Hertha, he features for the Polish international Under 16s, Under 18s, and Under 21s team, and also made his international debut against Malta on the 11th December 2003.

He moved to the Premier League in 2004 when he joined West Bromwich Albion. He made his debut on the 18th September 2004 against Fulham. In a match against Manchester United in the penultimate game of the 2004/05 season, Kuszczak kept a clean sheet for the 68 minutes in which he played, and this caught the eye of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex would sign Tomasz Kuszczak initially on loan for one season in 2006. The deal included an arrangement whereby Manchester United would buy the goalkeeper in 2007. While on loan at Manchester United, Kuszczak made 6 league appearances only but still joined the club on a four-year deal. In his debut against Arsenal in 2006, Kuszczak's mistake led to an Arsenal penalty, but he came out a hero when he saved the penalty from Gilberto Silva.

The fee that Manchester United paid to make the loan move permanent was reportedly £2.13 million. After he joined the club permanently, he became second-choice goalkeeper due to Edwin Van der Sar's form and Ben Foster's injury. In 2008 he signed a 2-year extension to his deal which took his contract with United until 2012. Kuszczak's mistakes in matches led to him losing out his place as second-choice keeper, and with the signing of Lindegaard and David de Gea, the retirement of Van der Sar, and the emergence of Ben Amos, Kuszczak become fourth-choice keeper.

Everything looked like his time was up as Manchester United goalkeeper and that he would be sold. Sir Alex Ferguson refused a transfer to rivals Leeds United in the beginning of February 2012. On the 21st February, it was officially announced on Manchester United's website that the goalkeeper has joined Watford on an emergency loan. In total Kuszczak made 61 appearances for United in all competitions. His aim now is to help Watford remain in the second level of English football, the nPower Championship. At Watford he faces a challenge for the first-team gloves against young English goalkeeper Scott Loach.

While at Manchester United, Kuszczak won 3 Premier League medals, 2 League Cups, three Community Shields, the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League, and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. It looks increasingly likely that Kuszczak will not make another appearance in a Manchester United shirt, as the loan move may be the first step towards a permanent transfer of the Polish goalkeeper.
