Scottish Football Clubs Who Played In The English FA Cup

The English FA Cup is one on the oldest trophies in the world when it comes to football, but once upon a time it wasn't just English teams that competed for it. In the early days of the FA Cup Scottish clubs were invited to participate, and although none of the Scottish clubs went on to win it there were a couple of 'close calls'. This articles looks at every single Scottish club that participated in the FA Cup and gives all their results.

The English FA Cup is one of the most famous football trophies on offer anywhere in the world, and it has a history that stretches way back to the very early beginnings of modern football. In modern days, the FA Cup is played only by clubs who play in England - that is to say English football clubs, plus the likes of Swansea and Cardiff (Welsh based but play in the English leagues!). But once upon a time, many years ago, some Scottish football clubs played in the FA Cup.

The very first FA Cup, in season 1871/72, saw the very first involvement from a Scottish club when Queen's Park were invited to take part. They were given a bye in the first round, a walkover against Donington School, Spalding in the second round and a bye in the 3rd round. Finding themselves in the Semi-Final of the FA Cup without having actually played a game, Queen's Park took on Wanderers at Kennington Oval. The game finished 0-0 and with Queen's Park not in a position to afford a longer stay to take part in a replay they were forced to scratch and Wanderers moved in to the final.

Over the next 15 years a total of 8 Scottish clubs took part in the English FA Cup. Not one of the Scottish clubs won the FA Cup but Queen's Park did twice reach the final and Rangers made it to the Semi-Final 1886/87 - later that year the Scottish FA banned Scottish clubs from taking part in the English FA Cup.

Oh how times have changed indeed in the world of football - the thought of Scottish football clubs competing in the English FA Cup these days in unthinkable. Another strange quirk about those far off days of football is that at that time the game was mostle amateur in status - in fact, the reason that Rangers scratched against Rawtenstall in 1885/86 was because the English team were a professional outfit!

Season 1886/87 might well have been the last time that Scottish clubs appeared in the English FA Cup - with Cowlairs, Heart of Midlothian, Partick Thistle, Queen's Park, Rangers, Renton and Third Lanark appearing - but special mention must go to a football club who originally played in English football before moving to Scottish football. Gretna.

In the early 1990's Gretna were plying their trade in the Northern League First Division in England when they entered the FA Cup. Drawn against Rochdale in 1991/92 a 0-0 draw saw the tie go to a replay, which Rochdale won 3-1. In 1993/94 Gretna found themselves back in the FA Cup where they were drawn against the mighty Bolton Wanderers. Despite being 2-1 up with only ten minutes left, Gretna eventually lost the game 3-2 with two late goals from Owen Coyle. Gretna, who were based in Scotland, left the English leagues in 2002 when they successfully applied to the Scottish League - their rise through the divisions saw them eventually play in the SPL, and they even reached the Scottish Cup final, but by 2008 the club were in a financial mess and soon folded.
