History of Manchester United Football Club

This article provides a brief history of one of the most well known and most successful football clubs in the world Manchester United Football Club.

This article will provide the reader with a brief history of Manchester United Football Club a.k.a. The Red Devils. Manchester United are one of the most supported and most valuable clubs in the world, worth over £1 billion. They are one of England's and Europe's most successful football clubs, and most well known clubs in the world. The article will be split into 3 parts, the pre-war era, the post-war era and the Sir Alex Ferguson Years.

Pre-War (Before 1945) Era

Manchester United Football Club was founded in 1878 under the name of Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) Football Club and was made up of employees from the railway company. Newton Heath LYR FC joined the football league in 1892 and split from the railway company changing it's name to Newton Heath FC.

In the new century to football club was facing being closed down and was heavily in debt, it was bought out for £500 and Manchester United Football Club was created. Manchester United won it's first, first division league titles in 1908 and 1911. The club also won the charity shield and the FA Cup for the first time. However, the club was relegated and promoted a number of times prior and after this period. It was also during this period (1910) that Manchester United moved to their new home, Old Trafford, which is still their home today over 100 years later.

Football completely stopped during the First World War and again nearly went bankrupt when football resumed. It was bought by a wealthy benefactor just before the Second World War where football was again suspended due to the Second World War.

Post War (After 1945) Era

After the Second World War, one of football's most well know managers took over at Old Trafford, Sir Matt Busby. This era saw Manchester United's first round of success, with 'Busby's Babes' (dubbed the 'babes' because of their average age of 22) winning a number of trophies and even competing in Europe. It was on the way back from one of these games that the Munich Air Disaster took place in February 1958, killing 23 people on board including a number of Manchester United players and staff.

In the 1960s, Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team signing a number of well known players like Denis Law and George Best. The team went on to win the league twice, the FA cup and their first European Cup. This was a very successful era for Manchester United and they established themselves as one of the best football clubs in the world.

In 1969, Sir Matt Busby resigned, only to be persuaded to rejoin the club after several unsuccessful season in the 1970s albeit, only temporarily. During the 1970s and 80s under the management of Ron Atkinson, the club won 2 FA cups, but never the league and their near relegation led to the departure of Ron Atkinson in 1986 and the start of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have enjoyed their most successful period in their history, winning (on a number of occasions) everything! When Sir Alex Ferguson first started at Manchester United, he didn't have it easy, it was reported that he was on the verge of being dismissed by the club but turned the club around to what they are today.

In the 1998-99 season Manchester United Football Club made history by becoming the first club to do the 'treble', they won the Premier League, the League Cup, and the FA Cup. Since this time, Manchester United has continued to be one of the best teams in the world, winning the league a number of times as well as the FA Cup and League Cup. Since the new millennium, Manchester United have also won the World Club Cup and the European Champions league.

Honors and Accolades

At the time of writing, Manchester United Football Club has won the Premier League (or the First Division) 18 times, the FA Cup 11 times and the League Cup, 4 times. They have also won the UEFA Champions League 3 times, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once and the European Super Cup once. They have also won the worldwide Intercontinental Cup once and the FIFA World Club Cup once, making them of the most successful clubs in history.
